The city’s lawsuit says Shah applied for the trademark two months after the city registered the Internet domain name “thecrossingsatcarlsbad.com.”
It accuses Shah of “cybersquatting” by laying claim to names that incorporate “The Crossings at Carlsbad” name, but for which he has no “bona fide commercial uuse.”
Shah has registered a number of variations of the name, according to the lawsuit.
According to a domain registration site, Shah owns more than 280 names, some of which are for sale. Among the domain names are “tiger-woods.mobi” and “trump-golf.mobi.
sked of his relationship with Woods, pro golf’s most popular player, Shah became defiant.
“There’s no company (that) ever came after me, including Tiger Woods,” Shah said. “Doesn’t he have an army of attorneys to come after me?”
The city held a contest in 2006 to name its $68 million golf course, which opened in August. The council announced “The Crossings at Carlsbad” as the name on Oct. 18, 2006, and newspapers reported it the next day.
