Sedo Finds Domain Names Continue As Good Investment

Sedo logoDomain names continue to be a good investment with median and average sales continue to increase according to Sedo’s Q3 2010 Domain Market Study. In the quarter there were 10,085 sales, a 1.58 per cent increase from the same period a year earlier (10,070 sales), worth $24.5 million, averaging $2,033 per domain.

The study found fixed-price sales accounted for 28 per cent of sales compared to five per cent a year earlier. Sedo puts this down to growing demand from businesses and individuals for being able to quickly secure a domain without bidding or negotiation. Offer/Counter-offer transactions continued to be the most popular sales type, accounting for 42 percent of transactions while auctions were the third most popular accounting for 19 per cent.

The .COM extension continues to be the most popular, accounting for three-quarters (74%) of all gTLD sales followed by .NET (11%), .ORG (8%), .INFO (5%) and .BIZ (2%), figures that have remained consistent across all gTLDs from the previous quarter.

Average sale prices among gTLDs increased for the abovementioned five, however these fluctuate due to occasional high value sales. In Q3, .ORG had the highest average sale at $2,736 per domain, up from $1,135 in quarter two, although down from $3,377 in quarter one, with the latter undoubtedly inflated due to the $1 million sale of poker.org.

Among country code TLDs (ccTLDs), .DE accounted for more than half of all sales with 52 per cent. CO.UK and .EU were a close second and third with 14 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.

For ccTLD sales, only the average sales price is available with CO.UK experiencing their highest average sales price over the past year while.DE, .AT and .ES saw moderate decreases in average sales prices.

.FR continued its run as the ccTLD with the highest average sales price for the last five quarters in a row, as far back as this report goes.

A better guide to sale prices is the median price, the figure for where there are as many domain names above a certain price as there are below. Here .ORG and .NET topped the list in Q3 2010 with a median sales price of $589 and $588 respectively. The median sales price for .COM was $522.
