.XXX Faces More ICANN Approval Delays

ICANN logoICANN delayed the introduction of the .XXX sponsored Top Level Domain (sTLD) once again at its board meeting on Friday.

The controversial top level domain, promoted since 2003 by ICM Registry as a place for pornographic websites but bitterly opposed by the adult entertainment industry and conservative Christian groups, has been delayed subject to Governmental Advisory Council (GAC) consultations and advice.

“An exclusive domain for adult entertainment has the advantage of allowing for greater control over their content and, in addition, for each web page added to the domain we will donate US$10 to finance initiatives to protect children,” ICM Registry chief Stuart Lawley told the ICANN meeting on Thursday.

The GAC is a body of governmental representatives that ICANN consults with on major decisions, and who has had reservations about the creation of .XXX. Governments such as Australia have consistently voiced their disapproval of the creation of the .XXX sTLD.

However the ICANN board in their adopted resolutions from their meeting on Friday in Cartagena to conclude the week-long ICANN meeting there said it “hereby determines that it intends to enter into a registry agreement with ICM Registry for the .XXX sTLD.”
