DENIC Finds Osnabrück German City With Most .DE Domain Registrations
Not much has changed from previous years, but the latest DENIC statistics on where .DE domain name registrants are shows that Osnabrück has the highest concentration of domain names with 591 domain names per 1,000 people followed by Munich (432) and Bonn (393).
Among districts, Amberg Sulzbach tops the list with 715 registrations per 1000 people, followed by Freising leads (399) and Starnberg (357), all making a great leap forward again. And among the Bundesländern (states), the city-state of Hamburg leads with with 286 domains per 1000 followed by Berlin (229) with Bavaria third with 193.
Registrations of .DE domain names continue to grow at a healthy rate, with an overall growth of 6.4 per cent in 2009-10, slightly down from the 7.1 per cent growth in 2008-09. In total numbers, registrations were 775,000 and 770,000 respectively.
The vast majority of registrations are by German individuals and businesses with over 800,000 registrations out of the then total 12.81 million registrations. Today there are 14.36 million active .DE domain names.
Within Germany, the number of registrations mean that one in every six residents has a domain name according to the report, should domain names be evenly distributed. This compares to .NL with approximately one in every four residents with a domain name.
While the physical barriers between East and West Germany came down over 20 years ago, there are still distinct differences. The former divided city of Berlin unsurprisingly is the city with the most registrations of those that fall within the former boundaries of East Germany, followed by Leipzig and Potsdam with 243 and 203 domains per thousand inhabitants respectively.
Domain strongholds remain the former West German metropolitan areas with the metropolitan areas of Munich and Hamburg as well as the river Rhine, the region around Hannover and the Rhine-Main region.
But growth is high in the former East German cities, including Berlin, who account for the ten fastest growing areas within the whole of Germany.
Among foreign registrants, more than 100,000 belong to Swiss registrants, followed by the United Kingdom, USA and surprisingly in fourth place, the United Arab Emirates.
