A sunrise period commenced for .EE domain names containing letters with diacritical marks, or internationalised domain names commenced on 16 May the Estonian Internet Foundation announced.
The sunrise period enables reservation of .EE domain names containing letters with diacritical marks based on a prior right (trademarks, names of physical and legal persons) before commencement of registration of such domain names on a first-come, first-served basis. This pre-registration has been organised in cooperation with the Association of the Estonian Patent Attorneys.
“The international experience has proved the need for such a sunrise period. There was no sunrise period before introduction of .EU domain names containing letters with diacritical marks in the European Union member-states and this omission attracted speculative purchasers of valuable domain names,” said Marek-Andres Kauts, Chairman of the Management Board of the Estonian Internet Foundation.
“The purpose of the sunrise period for the particular .EE domains is to offer companies and physical persons an opportunity to protect those .EE domain names containing letters with diacritical marks that resemble their trademarks, business or product names, by reserving the domain names pursuant to a prior right.”
The sunrise period is a voluntary event. During the reservation period registrants can submit applications for reservation of the relevant domain names of the following varieties:
- a business name (including a self-employed person’s business name) entered in the Estonian Commercial Register or a name entered in the register of non-profit associations and foundations
- a trademark registered in Estonia
- the surname of the physical person as of the application submission date
- the first name(s) and surname of the physical person as of the application submission date.
The reservation period is divided into two stages. From 16 May to 5 June, the first stage, the Estonian Internet Foundation will receive reservation applications. From 6 to 12 June, the second stage, the Association of the Estonian Patent Attorneys will review the reservation application and decide whether to accept or reject the application. The applicants will then be able to register their requested domain until 31 December the domain names entered in the list of reserved domains names as a result of their passing the verification procedure.
The actual registration of .EE domain names containing letters with diacritical marks will opened to all interested persons on a first-come, first-served basis from 13 June 2011.
