Is Dot-mobi doomed?

dotMobi logoIs Dot-mobi doomed? That’s the question asked in a recent article in ClickZ Network who say the gTLD “lived a brief (and not particularly productive) life.” The article suggests “the iPhone killed it.”

While I do not have access to registration statistics to see if this is the case, ClickZ claim “the only ones who appear to be mourning the suffix’s rather rapid demise are those who invested heavily … in .mobi domain names.”

The article is based on a presentation titled “The Death of .mobi, chaired “by the writer, at Search Engine Strategies in San Jose last week.”

The article says the iPhone is a game-changer with its Safari browser making .mobi redundant and says that “looming on the horizon is Skyfire, a mobile browser that’s going to do pretty much the same thing on Windows mobile devices; it transcodes regular Web sites on-the-fly and shoots them to mobile platforms.”

The article also includes suggestions for developing websites for mobile devices from Cindy Krum, director of new media strategies at Blue Moon Works.
