Landmark Year for .JP Sees One Million Registrations Passed

JPRS - Japan - logoJapan Registry Services have published their JP Domain Name Registry Report 2008, their 2008 annual report, outlining the activities for 2008 regarding the management of the .JP ccTLD.

Probably the most noteworthy of the .JP happenings was the passing of the one million registrations mark on March 1, 2008. As of May 1 2009 the number stands at 1,090,476. For a country the size of Japan, with around 127 million people, this is a very low rate of registrations per capita.

Other activities reported on in the annual report were:

  • a submission in response to a Notice of Inquiry by the U.S. Department of Commerce Regarding ICANN activities in February
  • a promotion to help the public better .JP domain names including a website called JPRS100.JP
  • implementation of a new system of CO.JP domain name applications between JP Registrars
  • and JPRS
  • promotion of CO.JP domain names to business
  • submission of comments in response to a Notice of Inquiry by the U.S. Department of Commerce Regarding the Promotion of DNSSEC in November
  • promotion of OR.JP domain names to incorporated associations and foundations in December
  • IETF activities including standardisation of internationalised email addresses and a revision of the Internationalised Domain Name protocol
  • ICANN, CENTR and APTLD participation
  • submission of comments regarding the agreement between ICANN and the US Department of Commerce and another on DNSSEC
  • publication of technical evaluation result of IDN TLD implementation method.
