Bonis replaces Mathieu Weill who suddenly resigned in late April after 12 years at the helm to take up a position as the Head of Digital Economy Department (SEN) in the Directorate-General for Enterprise (DGE), part of the Ministry of Economy in France.

Bonis was appointed Acting CEO on 1 May while a search was undertaken to replace Weill and will become the permanent CEO on 1 September.

Bonis, 44, has been working in the ICT sector, in technical governance of the internet and domain names for 15 years. He initially held responsibilities within the French government – in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministerial Cabinets in charge of the digital economy and then of sustainable development – before joining Afnic in 2012 as Deputy CEO.

As a specialist in international cooperation issues, Pierre Bonis has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of the CENTR, the European association of national domain name registries, since 2016.

“Afnic represents both the permanence and the resilience of the critical infrastructures of the Internet, and a constant spirit of openness and innovation,” said Bonis. “Continuing on from the work undertaken by Mathieu Weill, with the support of a Board of Trustees which itself is representative of the diversity of the French Internet community, and backed by the tremendous talent of the Afnic teams, in the years to come I intend to continue the quest for excellence to benefit all the stakeholders in the French Internet.”

Afnic (the French acronym for “Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération” i.e. the French Network Information Centre), is a non-profit association created in 1997. It was appointed by the French government to manage domain names under .fr country code top level domain (ccTLD). As the historic manager with more than 3 million domain names in .fr to date, it is also positioned as a provider of technical solutions and registry services: it currently manages 14 projects for new gTLDs, including .paris and .bzh along with several ccTLDs for French departments. Afnic is located in Saint-Quentin en Yvelines, where its staff of 80 works for the common good of the French Internet.
